What causes rebound congestion?

Rebound congestion put simply is the return of nasal congestion following the prolonged use of a nasal spray. It is normal for most active ingredients such as Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride and Xylometazoline Hydrochloride to cause rebound congestion, however, the presence of preservatives increases the chances of sensitisation and therefore the likelihood that rebound congestion will occur.
