Research has shown that consumption of large quantities of EPA + DHA (greater than 3.0 – 3.5 g/d) for several months can increase the skin bleeding time. This means that caution should be exercised when being treated with anticoagulant drugs or other drugs which have the potential to reduce the clotting ability of blood. The US Food and Drug Administration concluded that an upper total dietary intake of 3 g EPA + DHA could be established for the general population when selecting foods and supplements rich in these polyunsaturates available in general retail outlets.
It is always advisable for anyone who is being treated, with or without medication, for any illness or condition to consult his/her doctor before taking food supplements.
